Roulette Glossary of Terms and Terminology

Roulette TermsIf you are new to the game of roulette, it might be helpful to familiarize yourself with some of the terminology used at the roulette table. This brief roulette glossary provides a great introduction to that topic and will make educating yourself on the game of roulette all that much easier. Here are many of the roulette terms that you’ll want to familiarize yourself with.

Color Bets: This is an even-money bet on whether a red number or a black number will be spun.

Column Bet: This is a bet placed on a column of twelve numbers. A winning column bet pays 2-to-1 and carries a 5.26% house advantage in American Roulette and a 2.7% house advantage in European Roulette.

Corner Bet: A corner bet, also called 4-way, is a bet the splits four numbers on the roulette table. A winning corner bet pays 8-to-1, unless you’re playing in the 5Dimes Bonus casino where a winning 4-way bet pays 8.41.

Croupier: This is the proper name given to the operator of the roulette wheel. In many cases they are referred to as the dealer, even though no deal actually takes place.

Dozen Bet: This is an option to bet any of the three sets of dozens on the roulette table. 1-12, 13-24 or 25-36. A winning dozen bet pays 2-to-1 and carries a 5.26% house advantage in American Roulette and a 2.7% house advantage in European Roulette. Betfair Casino offers No Zero Roulette which means they have no house advantage on dozen bets.

Double zero: This is the 00 that is located on the American version of roulette.

En Prison: This is a rule used at a select few version of roulette where a player is allowed to keep their outside bets (i.e red/black, dozen bets, odds/evens etc) on the table for a chance to break even should a zero be spun. This rule is not common as in most cases a zero spun results in outside wagers being a push.

Even Odd Bet: This is an even money wager on whether the outcome of the spin will be an odd number or an even number.

Five Number Bet (also called 5-way): This refers to a bet which covers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3.

High-low Bet: This is another even money bet on whether the number spun will be 1 through 18 or 19 through 36.

Inside Bet: This refers to a bet which is placed on any set of numbers on the roulette wheel.

Outside Bet: This refers to a bet placed on Red/Black, Odd/Even or High/Low.

Row Bet: (see trio bet)

Split Bet: This is when the player places a bet on two numbers consecutively. A winning single number bet pays 17-to-1.

Straight Bet: This is when a player bets on a single number. Players can make an unlimited number of straight bets per game, up to the table limits.

Straight up Bet: This is a bet on a single number alone.

Trio Bet: This is when a player places a bet on three numbers, this is also referred to as a row bet.

Unit: This refers to the set amount that a player is making bets with.
